Elegant Summer Garden
The best cactus and palm gardens are made up of sturdy, architecturally elegant plants that are suited to the zone.
Rare is the leafy, flowering plant that will look healthy all day long in summer heat. This corner of my garden hosts morning glories that have been trained to grow up over a bare ficus trunk. They bloom from sunrise until the sun becomes too hot for them, around 9:30 a.m., at which time their blossoms close and the leaves shrink a bit until later in the day when the extreme light begins to subside. These morning glories were planted in late spring from seeds that had been collected from the plants last winter.
